Single Crochet
The single crochet (abbreviated as sc) is the most fundamental stitch in crochet, creating a dense, tight fabric perfect for blankets, amigurumi (stuffed toys), and scarves. It is the very first stitch beginners learn after mastering the slip knot and foundation chain. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Step-by-Step Guide
- Start with a foundation: Make a slip knot, put it on your hook, and create a chain of any length.
- Insert your hook: Skip the first chain from the hook. Insert your hook into the middle of the "V" of the second chain from the hook.
- Yarn over: Wrap the yarn over your hook and pull it through just the chain stitch. You should now have 2 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over again: Wrap the yarn over the hook one more time.
- Complete the stitch: Pull the yarn through both loops on the hook. You will be left with exactly 1 loop on your hook. You have just completed one single crochet!
- Continue the row: Repeat steps 2 through 5 for every chain across. [1, 2, 6]
Moving to the Next Row
When you reach the end of your first row, you need to turn your work to start the next.
- Chain one: Yarn over and pull the yarn through the single loop on your hook to create one chain. This is your "turning chain" and gives the row the height it needs.
- Turn: Flip your work over so the unworked side is facing you.
- Work your stitches: Instead of the chain, insert your hook under both top loops of the first "V" shape in the row below. Repeat the single crochet process (Yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through both loops) across the row. [2]
