Back post Double Crochet

A back post double crochet (bpdc) is a texture-building crochet stitch worked around the post of the stitch below it, rather than into the top loops

Here is how to do it step-by-step:

🛠️ Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Yarn over (yo) your hook.
  2. Insert hook from the back of your work to the front, then back to the rear around the post of the next stitch.
  3. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You now have three loops on your hook.
  4. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops.
  5. Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops. [5, 6, 7, 8, 9]

💡 Quick Tips

  • Placement: The post of the stitch is pushed away from you, toward the back of the fabric.
  • Ribbing: Alternate front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc) to create a stretchy, ribbed texture perfect for cuffs and hat brims.
  • Height: A bpdc is slightly shorter than a standard double crochet because it wraps around the lower stitch.
Would you like help with a specific pattern using this stitch, or do you want to learn how to combine it with a front post stitch for ribbing?
