Cloud stitch

The Crochet Cloud Stitch is a highly textured, thick, and squishy pattern that alternates single crochet stitches with puff (or bobble) stitches to create a fluffy, cloud-like texture on one side of the fabric. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Here is what the finished texture looks like:

Stitches You Need to Know

  • ch: Chain
  • sc: Single crochet
  • sc2tog: Single crochet two together (decrease)
  • Puff Stitch / Bobble: Work multiple incomplete double crochets into the same stitch, then yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook. [6, 7, 8, 9, 10]

Step-by-Step Tutorial

The pattern works best on a foundation chain with an even number of stitches. [11]
Row 1 (Base Row):
  • sc into the second ch from your hook.
  • sc in every ch across.
  • ch 1, turn. [12, 13, 14]
Row 2 (The Texture Row):
  • sc in the first stitch.
  • *Work 1 Puff Stitch in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the following stitch.*
  • Repeat from * to * across the row.
  • Note: Push the puffs toward the back (wrong side) of your work as you go to make them pop.
  • ch 1, turn. [15, 16, 17, 18, 19]
Row 3 (Anchor Row):
  • sc in every single stitch across to secure the puffs.
  • ch 1, turn. [20]
Row 4 (Stagger Row):
  • To keep the "clouds" from lining up in rigid columns, stagger them.
  • sc in the first two stitches.
  • *Work 1 Puff Stitch in the next stitch, then 1 sc in the following stitch.*
  • Repeat across, ending with sc in the last two stitches.
  • ch 1, turn. [21, 22, 23, 24, 25]
Row 5:
  • sc in every single stitch across.
  • Repeat Rows 2 through 5 until your project reaches its desired length. [26, 27, 28, 29, 30]
