Elizabeth Stitch

The Elizabeth stitch, also widely known as the Mini Bean stitch, is a gorgeous, reversible crochet technique that creates a soft, pebbled texture. Because it looks identical on both sides, it is perfect for blankets, scarves, and accessories. [1, 2, 3]

The Elizabeth Stitch (Mini Bean Stitch)

Work with any odd number of chains for your foundation row. The basic instructions below refer to standard US terminology:
  • The Base Row: Chain any odd number. Single crochet (SC) in the second chain from the hook, and SC in each remaining chain; turn.
  • The Elizabeth Stitch:
    1. Chain 3.
    2. Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
    3. Yarn over, insert your hook into the exact same stitch, and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
    4. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.
    5. Chain 1 to secure the stitch. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Row 2: Chain 3 and turn. Skip the first stitch. Work the Elizabeth Stitch in the next stitch, chain 1, skip 1 stitch, and repeat across. Work your final stitch in the chain-3 space from the previous row. [3]
Tips and Variations
  • One-Row Repeat: After your base foundation, you simply repeat Row 2 for the rest of your project.
  • Placement: Make sure you are working your stitches into the "eye" or the space created by the chain-1 in the row below, rather than standard chain gaps.
  • Finishing: To mirror the straight edges of your starting row, work a single crochet row evenly across the top at the end of your project. [3]
Video Tutorial

If you're a visual learner, watching the stitch in motion can be incredibly helpful to master the rhythm of the partial stitches.
