Sieve stitch

The sieve stitch is a popular and beginner-friendly crochet technique that creates a textured, lightweight mesh with a distinct front and back. It is composed of a simple two-row repeat using only basic stitches (single crochet and chain). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

The Setup (Row 1)
  • Chain an even number of stitches.
  • Row 1: Work a single crochet (sc) into the second chain from your hook, and one sc in each chain across. Chain 1 and turn. [2, 6, 7]
The 2-Row Repeat
  • Row 2: Single crochet in the first stitch. Chain 1, skip 1 stitch, single crochet in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * across, ending with a single crochet in the last stitch. Chain 1 and turn.
  • Row 3: Skip the first stitch. Work 2 single crochets into the first chain-1 space. Work 2 single crochets in each chain-1 space across. End with 1 single crochet in the very last stitch of the row. Chain 1 and turn.
  • Continue: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until your project is the desired length. [2]
Uses and Materials

Because the resulting fabric has a robust structure but retains flexibility, the sieve stitch is highly recommended for projects like:
  • Blankets and throws
  • Summer scarves and shawls
  • Dishcloths and home décor items [1, 2, 4, 5]
You can work the sieve stitch with practically any yarn and hook size, though it shines best with lightweight and medium-weight yarns. [3, 4, 8, 9]
