Lotus Stitch

The crochet lotus stitch (also known as the triple puff stitch) is a beautiful, textured pattern made of continuous puff stitches. Despite its intricate look, it is a beginner-friendly, reversible one-row repeat. It creates a thick, squishy fabric perfect for blankets, scarves, and pot holders. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

How to Crochet the Lotus Stitch

The lotus stitch is worked using any multiple of 6 stitches, plus an additional 5 chains.
  • Puff Stitch: Yarn over, insert hook into designated stitch, and pull up a loop. Repeat this two more times (you will have 7 loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull through the first 6 loops, then yarn over and pull through the final 2 loops.
  • Lotus Stitch: A single cluster made of [Puff stitch, Chain 2, Puff stitch, Chain 2, Puff stitch] all in the same space. [1, 3, 6]
Row 1: The Foundation
  1. Make a foundation chain using multiples of 6 + 5. (e.g., 23 chains).
  2. Single crochet (sc) into the second chain from your hook.
  3. Skip 2 chains, then work a full Lotus Stitch into the next chain.
  4. Skip 2 chains, then work 1 sc into the next chain.
  5. Repeat the pattern of [skipping 2 ch, Lotus stitch, skipping 2 ch, sc] until you have 3 chains left.
  6. Skip 2 chains and work a partial lotus stitch (only two puff stitches separated by a chain-two) into the very last chain. [1, 2, 3]
Row 2: The Repeat Row
  1. Chain 1 and turn your work. (This turning chain does not count as a stitch).
  2. Single crochet into the very first stitch.
  3. Work a full Lotus Stitch directly into the single crochet from the previous row.
  4. Make a single crochet on top of the middle puff stitch of the next lotus stitch in the row below.
  5. Continue alternating working a full lotus stitch into the next single crochet, and a single crochet into the middle puff below.
  6. Finish the row with a partial lotus stitch (two puff stitches) in the final stitch. [2, 5, 7]
Repeat Row 2 for as long as you need to reach your desired length. [7]

Tips & Tricks
  • Use a larger hook for the chain: The bottom edge of this stitch can tend to pull tight. It is highly recommended to go up half a hook size or one full hook size just for your foundation chain to prevent it from warping your project.
  • Tension is key: Because puff stitches require pulling through many loops at once, keep your loops relatively loose and even. Holding the working loops down with your finger can help maintain consistency. [1, 2, 4]
