Puff Stitch
The crochet puff stitch is a beautiful, textured stitch created by working several partially completed half-double crochets into the same stitch and joining them together. It adds a lovely 3D pop to blankets, beanies, and garments. [1, 2]
Standard 7-Loop Puff Stitch
This is the most common version of the puff stitch, which gives a rounded, plush texture.
- Yarn over (YO) and insert your hook into the designated stitch or space.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop. Pull this loop up to the height of the surrounding stitches (so it doesn't bunch up your work). (You will have 3 loops on your hook).
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 two more times in the exact same stitch. (Each repeat adds 2 more loops to your hook. You should now have 7 loops on your hook).
- Yarn over and pull your yarn through all 7 loops on your hook at once.
- Chain 1 (ch 1) to lock the stitch and secure the puff. [7, 8]
Tips for Success
- Keep your loops loose: Pulling up the loops to a consistent, slightly loose height will make it much easier to pull the yarn through all of them at the end.
- Customize your puff size: You aren't limited to 7 loops! You can make a larger, plumper puff by repeating the YO-pull-up-a-loop process four or more times (e.g., creating 9, 11, or 13 loops).
- Check the closing chain: The chain 1 that secures the puff stitch is meant to lock it in place, not to add to your overall stitch count, unless your specific pattern notes otherwise. [1]
