The Sultan Stitch is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern that alternates between 'V-stitches' and clusters of double crochets to create a textured, lightweight, and airy fabric resembling little cupcakes. It is highly efficient with yarn, making it perfect for summer shawls or scarves. [1, 2, 3]

Foundation & Pattern Multiple
  • Stitch Multiple: Chain a multiple of 4 + 2 chains (plus an extra 3 turning chains for the first row). For example, a sample chain of 21 (16 + 2 + 3) works well for practicing. [1, 2]
The 4-Row Repeat
  • Row 1 (Foundation): Work your first double crochet, chain 2, and double crochet into the 6th chain from your hook. Skip the next 3 chains, and repeat the [double crochet, chain 2, double crochet] sequence in the next stitch. Continue this across until you have 3 chains left. Skip 2 chains and place 1 double crochet in the last chain.
  • Row 2: Chain 3, turn your work, and place 4 double crochets into each of the chain-2 spaces across. Finish by placing 1 double crochet in the top of the turning chain.
  • Row 3: Chain 4 (counts as a double crochet + chain 1), and work a double crochet in the very first space. In the spaces between the 4-double crochet clusters from the previous row, work a V-stitch (double crochet, chain 2, double crochet). End with a double crochet, chain 1, double crochet in the last space.
  • Row 4: Chain 3, turn, and place 2 double crochets in the first chain-1 space. Then work 4 double crochets into each subsequent chain-2 space across the row. Finish with 3 double crochets in the initial chain space.
  • Row 5: Chain 3, turn, and skip the first 3 double crochets. Work a V-stitch (double crochet, chain 2, double crochet) in the space between the skipped stitches and the next cluster. Repeat this across, and end with a single double crochet in the top of the turning chain.
  • Continuing: Repeat Rows 2 through 5 until your project reaches your desired length. [2]
