Timber stitch

The timber stitch is an easy, textured crochet technique that uses a one-row repeat to create a beautiful, woven-looking fabric. It is created by alternating single crochet stitches, chains, and single crochet two together (sc2tog). This reversible stitch is highly favored for blankets and bags because it is cozy and not too dense. [1, 2, 3]

How to Crochet the Timber Stitch
  • Row 1: Chain a multiple of 2 + 1. Work into the 3rd chain from the hook by performing an sc2tog across the 3rd and 4th chains, then chain 1. Repeat this sequence across the row, ending with a regular single crochet in the last chain.
  • Row 2: Chain 1. Work a single crochet in the first stitch, then repeat sc2tog across two stitches and chain 1 all the way across. End with a regular single crochet into the skipped chains from the first row.
  • Row 3: Chain 1. Single crochet in the first stitch, then repeat sc2tog across the first two stitches and chain 1. Repeat across the row. [2]
For the rest of the pattern, you simply repeat Row 3 for as long as you desire. [2]
